What is NTP?

Night of the Patriots is a NON-POLITICAL journal-style visual novel following the life of military officer Senior Lieutenant Artyom Antonovich Novikov, a Soviet tankist just before the Battle of Kursk. As the unit comes out of the Battle of Rzhev, Novikov finds himself in the position of Company Commander for his unit after the death of their last commanding officer. As he eases into the position and gets to learn about the many people who are to help him in his endeavour to improve the overall quality of the unit's operation, his position is taken back and given to Captain Fyodor Stanislavovich Strelnikov, who for an unknown reason to Novikov, is deemed more fit for the position. At first, Strelnikov's command experience proves useful, as his history as a political officer helps him kick off preparations with a bang, until he starts to... disappear for longer periods of time.......Suspicious of Strelnikov's activities, Novikov and a few other of his fellow soldiers try to figure out what's behind their new commander's actions....Night of the Patriots is scheduled to publish on April 24th, 2024!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who makes your assets? - I make all my own assets. All the art and writing belongs to me. The music is mostly free domain, or covered by me. Most music that is not written by me have very lax copyright laws when it comes to covers. I cannot take credit for all the code, as most, if not all inspiration and troubleshooting aid has come from people who've had my same problems on r/RenPy, Lemma Soft Forums, r/DDLCModding, and various other sites. Thank you Ren'Py community!

  • What is your inspiration to write historical fiction? - As a child, I grew up reading various alternate history books, most notably the works of Caroline Tung Richmond, as well as various other writers. From 2020-2022, I spent a lot of my free time transitioning from fandom-type communities to making my own art and writing pieces, in hopes of entertaining others with the same interests that I have. Some further game inspiration includes Red Orchestra 2, Rising Storm, Papers Please, Everlasting Summer, and Company of Heroes 2.

  • Are you of Ex-Soviet descent? - I am not. My family is of Southeast Asian descent, and I am currently living in British Columbia, Canada.

  • What is your background as a writer? - From as young as my elementary school years, I have been writing pieces, both fiction and non-fiction for school projects, summer camps, and other community-based writing events. Some works that I have that have come out of those events include writing piece "The Envelope" and "Wind of Karelia," in which the former has been published in the Vancouver Public Library's Writing Camp Anthology of 2019. If you seem familiar with a few of the names in The Envelope, it's because Lieutenant Novikov (known as Colonel Novikov there) was meant to be the antagonist of the story.

  • What is your background as a programmer? - I attended my first programming events back when I was in 4th grade. When the epitome of online programming software geared towards children included softwares like Scratch, I spent hours playing, taking apart, and figuring out how the software worked. Looking back on it, Scratch was quite complicated for my little 10 year old mind. In early 2019, at the height of Doki Doki Literature Club's popularity, I discovered Ren'Py, a Python-based software used to create visual novels. Through that I ended up creating two projects, one that never finished, and eventually abandoned both. I have since picked back up Ren'Py as of June 2023.

  • When is the expected release date for Night of the Patriots? - April 24th, 2024 is the soft release date. It may be pushed back depending on how the future plays out, especially since I'm the only developer.

Visual Novel

The concept of NTP being presented as a visual novel is very new, so new that I only started to develop on it last night (as of June 5th 2023). After the concept was suggested by a family friend, I looked back at my old works and revised Night of the Patriots as a concept in order to get an idea of how it could be set up. Above includes screenshots of mock-up sceens I've made in order to get a feeling of how NTP could look as a game. The current first entry found in the story's original Wattpad has been fully ported to the NTP concept VN. Surprisingly, the dialogue fit very well for an introduction post, and production of this book has been fully shifted towards the visual novel aspect of the writing. All assets are either generated via Ren'Py, or belong to me. Fonts are downloaded from 1001Fonts.com, and are all suitable for commercial use.

Night of the Patriots is run on Ren'Py 7.5.3, contrary to the recommendations of the Ren'Py download website. This version of the software is just more familiar to me, there's no real reason why NTP uses it.You can download Ren'Py and make your own games here: https://www.renpy.org

you cannot change what is in the past. move on.
